Under Difficult Circumstances The Conversation (The sound in the background that you hear at some point during the conversation, is Skhumbuzo mowing the lawn with the tractor. Here it is a case of: when the sun shines, you try to make a dent in the grass.) Elements From The Conversation Sebastien visiting with family between hospital admissions Music "My life has been made livable by two things: the love that I've given and the love that I've received." From The Restory - Conversations On The Journey (57)

Contemplatively Busy The Conversation Elements From The Conversation On our visit to Gauteng the past week, we've received such a number of enquiries regarding The Restory moving and requests to be kept up to date on the matter, that we've decided to have it as an item on the blog for the foreseeable future. We'll be posting pictures and updates on Facebook and Instagram as well, but it is handy to have it as a blog post where it is easy to find in years to come. We want to have everything moved to Tafelkop by end of May. To say that we'll be settled by then is unrealistic against the background of our strength, time and funds and the degree that it will be available. The main focus this week is moving the content of Sebastien's rondavel to his new house. The Mazda loaded for the move of Sebastien's furniture over the weekend.  Sebastien's empty rondavel.  Matilda is almost done sorting out the pantry, with the empty shelves attesting to that. These old sh...

Knitting a Community

“You will find out that Charity is a heavy burden to carry, heavier than the kettle of soup and the full basket. But you will keep your gentleness and your smile.  It is not enough to give soup and bread. This the rich can do. You are the servant of the poor, always smiling and good-humored. They are your masters, terribly sensitive and exacting master you will see. And the uglier and the dirtier they will be, the more unjust and insulting, the more love you must give them. It is only for your love alone that the poor will forgive you the bread you give to them.”                                                                               - St. Vincent de Paul It is the annual knitting marathon of the CMR (English: Christian Social Council) of Volksrust. ...

New in an old way

We’ve just completed the first unit of our Living School program. Not the easiest of entries I might say. It’s like learning a new language while reading St Bonaventure (1259), The Cloud of Unknowing (late 1300’s) and Teresa of Avila (1577). “It sounds quite boring” you might think. “Being busy with all that old stuff of ancient dead people long forgotten. Their thoughts and words are of no use for us living in the 21 st century; merely the eccentric interest of a few nerds busy naval gazing. There are such a large number of recent exciting authors and books. Why not stick to them? ” I am totally with you on the exciting recent authors and publications. But we are only now discovering the value of the long dead and buried for our survival and for daily living. I experienced it in a very concrete manner again this past week. My brother-in-law William, a budding bee keeper, earlier this year, placed two bee hives close to our vegetable patch. The bees’ presence and cons...
